Archipelago and Seoul Settle Patent Disputes

Seoul Semiconductor based in Ansan, South Korea, reported that it and Seoul Viosys Co., Ltd. have resolved two patent infringement lawsuits it filed against Archipelago Lighting, Inc. in the U.S. Federal District Court for the Central District of California. Archipelago sells LED bulbs.

In 2017, Seoul filed the company’s first patent infringement lawsuit against Archipelago for the alleged infringement of twelve LED patents covering various aspects of Seoul’s long-established Acrich technology. A few months afterward, Seoul filed a second patent lawsuit against Archipelago accusing the company of selling additional products that infringe eight other Acrich technology patents.

In the lawsuits, Archipelago acknowledged that several third-party suppliers produced the LED components in its LED bulbs. Although Archipelago admitted that the company had no knowledge of any Seoul Semiconductor patents, it did not dispute that the LED bulbs in question infringed Seoul Semiconductor’s patents. According to Seoul, Archipelago also did not dispute the validity of the relevant its patents and agreed to pay a license fee as part of its commitment to respect the intellectual property rights of others.

Court Ruled in Seoul’s Favor Due to Archipelago Admissions

The California Central district court ruled in favor of Seoul Semiconductor in these cases based upon Archipelago’s admissions. Seoul’s asserted patents include technologies for LED chip fabrication, LED epitaxial growth, LED packaging, filament bulb LED structures, LED drivers for high-voltage operations, and Acrich MJT (multi-junction technology) for high power LED chips operating at 6V.

Seoul says its Acrich technology enables high-voltage operation with a high power output using only a small number of LED chips. Specifically, Acrich technology employs the company’s proprietary LED driver technology to enable high-voltage operation, as well as its proprietary MJT technology for mounting and integrating numerous LEDs within a small area. Seoul says this arrangement maximizes the available space in LED products and increases power efficiency by 20%. Also, Seoul says the space saving design aids a simple circuit design and significantly reduces the size and cost of LED products.

Nam Ki-bum, executive VP of the lighting department at Seoul Semiconductor, said, “While Seoul will continue enforcement actions to prevent unauthorized use of Acrich technology, we will offer a license program with reasonable terms for companies that recognize and respect the value of Acrich technology. This will promote the distribution of innovative technology products in the market.” He added, “For young entrepreneurs and small entities that wish to pursue technology innovation, this will help them achieve business success, while Seoul continuously works to encourage a fair competition market where intellectual property rights are respected.”

Tridonic of Dornbirn, Austria, has released the fifth generation of the 24 mm LLE ADVANCED modules for linear luminaires and panel lights. The new modules boast efficacy of up to 200 lumens per watt. Tridonic says that the improved quality and efficacy of the LED modules results from a combination of the production and procurement process, and the company’s chip selection and binning based on optical criteria.

Tridonic cites its rigorous procurement and production process, which only uses premium raw materials as one of the reasons for the high quality and high efficacy of the LED modules. The company also says it bases its binning and chip selection on comprehensive testing and stringent optical criteria, which the company claims far exceed the usual standards. The resulting improvements thus boosted the efficacy of the fifth generation LLE modules up to 200 lumens per watt in the high-efficiency portfolio and up to 190 lumens per watt in the standard portfolio.

All of the new modules also come with a color rendering index above 90 or above 80, both as SELV and non-SELV variants. Tridonic asserts that the modules give designers greater flexibility now that it is also possible to combine SELV variants in different lengths, while the light output remains entirely homogeneous. Also, the company notes that the lengths and drill holes according to ZHAGA requirements allow integration into existing designs.

Wide Range of Applications

The new LLE modules are compatible with existing accessories for linear luminaires, including ACL linear lenses with light distributions, mounting clips, end caps, and covers. With the appropriate covers, the modules can even be used right away as luminaires, according to Tridonic.

The company says that combining the modules with a suitable LED driver (either fixed output or dimmable) creates a highly efficient system for a broad range of applications. The LLE modules come in different lengths and with color temperatures of 2,700 K, 3,000 K, 3,500 K, 4,000 K, 5,000 K, and 6,500 K. Also with the right dimming driver, Tridonic asserts that the respective color temperature remains constant even when dimmed. The modules feature a projected service life of 72,000 hours, and Tridonic backs them with a five-year manufacturer guarantee.

Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL) confirmed that Hygenic Light LED killed 99.9% of Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) without any chemicals. LG Innotek notes that the sterilization function can be used where many people pass by such as kitchens or restrooms because it does not harm humans. Furthermore, the International Electrotechnical Commission found that the light meets the Photobiological Safety Standard (IEC 62471) because it does not have any negative effect on human eyes or skin.

Also, the company says that its ‘Visible Disinfection Lighting’ can optimize the sterilization power through the control of the light’s intensity (brightness).
