Zhaga Starts Work on New Books

Zhaga Books are specifications that define the mechanical, thermal, photometric, electrical and control interfaces between LED light engines (LLEs) and LED luminaires.

Books 9, 10 and 11 are not yet approved for use by Zhaga members. There are eight approved Zhaga Books (numbered 1 to 8), several of which are also available for public download – see http://ift.tt/1mYDy4s for more details.

Book 9
Zhaga Book 9 will define the interfaces of an LLE comprising a non-socketable LED module with a ring-shaped light-emitting surface (LES) and a separate LED driver (also known as electronic control gear).

The specification will cover small, mid-power LED modules that have diameters of 12 mm or 25 mm for the ring-shaped LES. Such modules could enable LED luminaire products for use in consumer lighting applications, such as small spotlights, track lighting and other compact luminaires.

Book 10 and Book 11
Book 10 and Book 11 will both describe LLEs that comprise a circular, non-socketable LED module with a separate LED driver. The modules have a circular LES and are suitable for spotlighttype applications.

Both Book 10 and Book 11 are similar to Book 3, which is already published. Book 3 specifies modules that have an overall diameter of 50 mm and a height of 7.2 mm, with LES diameters ranging from 9.0 mm to 23 mm.

Book 10 will describe larger, higher-output LED modules with an overall diameter of 75 mm and a height of 8 mm. The LES diameters are 23 mm, 30 mm and 40 mm.

Meanwhile, the modules in Book 11 are much smaller, with an overall diameter of just 35 mm and a height of 3.5 mm. The LES diameters are 6.0 mm, 9.0 mm and 13.5 mm.

Book development
Zhaga Books start life as proposals made by Zhaga-member companies. Using these proposals, the members work collaboratively to create light-engine specifications that serve the lighting industry’s best interests.

As well as continuing to look at new proposals from members, Zhaga has also initiated a project to evaluate the use of LED light engines across a wide range of lighting applications. The goal is to identify opportunities and set priorities for the development of new specifications that will provide most benefit to the LED lighting industry. Input will be sought from a wide range of interested companies and organizations, both inside and outside Zhaga.

About Zhaga:
The Zhaga Consortium develops interface specifications that enable the interchange of LED light engines manufactured by different companies. Zhaga is a global cooperation, with members that include luminaire makers, lamp manufacturers, LED module makers, and companies that supply components and materials to the lighting industry.
Zhaga’s approach is to specify the interfaces between LED light engines and LED luminaires. Each Book defines the interfaces – mechanical, thermal, photometric, electrical and control – for different categories of LED light engine. Using Zhaga specifications, a luminaire maker can use LED light engines from different suppliers without having to change the design of the luminaire.
